Shopify order errors

Common Shopify order errors and how to begin troubleshooting them.

Shopify may return an error when Trade Runner tries to create an order in your Shopify store.

Use this article to identify the error message, understand what caused it, and decide whether to resend the order, update Shopify, manually manage the order, or cancel and refund the customer.

Error message

What it means

Shopify could not claim inventory for the order because the product does not have enough available stock.

Common causes

  • The product is out of stock in Shopify
  • The Shopify inventory quantity is zero
  • Inventory has changed since the order was placed
  • Another order has already claimed the remaining stock

What to do

  1. Check the product inventory quantity in Shopify.
  2. Increase the available inventory if the order should still be fulfilled.
  3. Resend the order from Trade Runner.
  4. If the order cannot be fulfilled, cancel the order in Trade Runner.
  5. Refund the customer through Trade Me.

Error message

What it means

Shopify cannot create the order because one or more line items are no longer valid.

This usually means the product is inactive, unavailable, or has been deleted from Shopify.

Common causes

  • The product has been deleted in Shopify
  • The product has been made unavailable in Shopify
  • The product was automatically made unavailable when it ran out of stock
  • Shopify can no longer find the product details needed to create the order

What to do

  1. Check whether the product still exists in Shopify.
  2. Confirm the product is active and available.
  3. If the product should still be sold, restore the product in Shopify.
  4. If the order can be fulfilled another way, manually manage the order.
  5. If the order cannot be fulfilled, cancel the order in Trade Runner.
  6. Refund the customer through Trade Me.

What it means

Shopify has checked the customer email address and determined that it is not valid.

Common causes

  • The email address is incorrectly formatted
  • The email address contains a typo
  • The email domain does not exist
  • The email domain has no MX record
  • The email domain does not have valid DNS records

What to do

  1. Review the customer email address in Trade Runner.
  2. Decide whether the order should proceed or be cancelled.
  3. If the order should proceed, edit the customer email address in Trade Runner to a valid email address.
  4. Resend the order.
  5. If the order should not proceed, cancel the order in Trade Runner.
  6. Refund the customer through Trade Me.

Cannot find product variant, sku: 1234567890, retailerRef: 54321012345

Error message

Cannot find product variant, sku: 1234567890, retailerRef: 54321012345

The SKU and retailer reference values above are examples only. The actual numbers will vary.

What it means

The product or product variant cannot be found in Trade Runner, so the order cannot be sent to Shopify.

Common causes

  • The product has been deleted in Shopify
  • The product has been made unavailable
  • The product has run out of stock
  • The product changed from a multi-variant product to a single-variant product
  • The product changed from a single-variant product to a multi-variant product
  • The variant SKU has changed in Shopify. If the Shopify variant has been deleted, updating or recreating the product will create a new Shopify variant ID. This will not match the original variant ID stored in Trade Runner.
  • The order is referencing an old or different variant SKU

What to do

  1. Check the product in Shopify.
  2. Confirm whether the product is active and available.
  3. Confirm whether the product is set up as a single-variant or multi-variant product.
  4. Check whether the product’s variant SKU has changed.
  5. If the order cannot be resent, manually manage the order or cancel and refund the customer through Trade Me.

What it means

Shopify requires a province, state, or region value for the billing and shipping address, but the field is blank.

Common causes

  • The State field is empty
  • The region was not provided in the order address
  • The address was entered with missing state or province information
  • Shopify requires a state, province, or region for the destination country

What to do

  1. Edit the order address in Trade Runner.
  2. Add a valid State, Province, or Region value.
  3. For Australian addresses, use the abbreviated state or territory format, such as NSW, QLD, VIC, SA, WA, TAS, ACT, or NT. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/States_and_territories_of_Australia
  4. For New Zealand addresses, use the abbreviated region format, such as AUK or CAN. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regions_of_New_Zealand
  5. Save the corrected address.
  6. Resend the order.

Shopify has received a province or region value for a New Zealand address, but the value is not valid for New Zealand.

Common causes

  • The region has been entered incorrectly
  • The address uses a full region name where Shopify expects an accepted abbreviated value
  • The address contains an Australian state value for a New Zealand address
  • The State or Province field does not match the selected country

What to do

  1. Edit the billing and shipping address in Trade Runner.
  2. Check that the country is set correctly.
  3. Update the State, Province, or Region field to a valid New Zealand region value.
  4. Save the corrected address.
  5. Resend the order.

Shopify cannot create the order because the billing and shipping address does not include a country.

Common causes

  • The Country field is empty
  • The order address is incomplete

  • The country is not enabled in the Shopify store’s shipping settings

What to do

  1. Edit the order address in Trade Runner.
  2. Add the correct country to the billing and shipping address.
  3. Check the Shopify store’s shipping settings.

  5. Save the corrected address.
  6. Resend the order.
